Putnam County Legislature Defunds Sheriff's Marine Unit

In a move that would appear to defy logic, the Putnam County legislature has moved forward on its quest to defund the county's marine unit just as the summer boating season is beginning. Philipstown's Legislator, Nancy Montgomery, was the sole vote of dissent. The unit has been in operation for 23 years, according to Sheriff Langley.

Sheriff Langley challenged the decision by Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell and the Putnam County Legislature to remove $45K from the budget, citing concern about the safety and welfare of boaters on Putnam waterways.

A recent press release from the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services noted that an incident occurring on the Hudson River on a weekday would have been handled no differently, as the Sheriff's Marine Patrol unit only works weekends and holidays.

Would a full-time Sheriff's marine patrol unit be more appropriate, especially in the summer months?
