SOME TIPS
Introduce yourself, ask for the name of the person who handles cabinet nominations, and share where you're from. ("Hi, this is Joe calling from Wilmington, Delaware. Can I speak to the person in your office who handles cabinet nominations?")
State the reason you are calling and the specific action you want your senator to take — you oppose Betsy DeVos' nomination for Secretary of Education and ask your senator to vote against her confirmation.
WHAT TO SAY
Here are some talking points you can go over:
- Betsy DeVos has never worked in, attended, or sent her children to public schools. Why would Americans want her to lead our public school system?
- Over the years, Betsy DeVos and her family have been strong advocates for and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to anti-LGBTQ organizations.
- She is an advocate for teaching creationism in schools, is anti-teacher, and pro-conversion therapy. We can’t see those beliefs implemented in our school systems across the country.
